In this case, the decision not to extend was the catalyst to a clever, cost saving design that created a cosy, modern home with fantastic connections to the garden. The client initially thought that they needed more space, however analysis of their existing home and their daily activity led to a re-modelling of their existing house to create a design that met all of their needs without the need to extend.


The client had ambitions for a large rear extension involving expensive demolition of an old kitchen outrigger but they had no idea about how much it would cost. HUMAN’s initial cost calculations showed that these plans where stretching their budget and as such set out to investigate alternative designs.

In order to do this Ashley held several design workshops with the client, talking through ideas and sketching design options. In this case, the result of our workshops was a design that kept within the footprint of the existing house and utilised every inch of space available.
